In my inaugural post I, a casual League of Legends player who had never played a ranked game, laid out my plan to wander into the hellscape that is the North American solo queue scene and document my experience over the course of the 2015 season.

I can happily attest that I have now completed the first step of that journey because on the opening day of the 2015 League of Legends Ranked Season I played my first ever ranked solo queue match. Continue reading

Welcome to Summoner’s Rift

“Welcome to Summoner’s Rift” are the words first heard upon loading into a match of the wildly popular free-to-play video game League of Legends (unless you’re playing 3v3, ARAM or Dominion and God help you if you’re playing Dominion).

The female announcer’s voice is ethereal, sultry, and vaguely British. Kathleen Turner meets Helen Mirren. That is to say, sexy. And I’m sure that’s a calculated choice by League of Legends (LoL) developer, Riot Games, given that the vast majority of the 65 million or so monthly players are male. I’m one of those male players, my summoner name is CrazyGiblets and I’ve been playing the game since a friend, summoner name Doctrorpheus, convinced me to give it a try (hey, it’s free after all) in the early summer of 2014 but I haven’t yet played LoL’s eminent game mode, ranked solo queue.
